The New Hampshire Supreme Court has agreed to hear the case of a 10-year-old home-schooled girl who critics say was ordered into a public school because of her Christian faith. The Court Order, linked in the article below, is well worth the read.
Unfortunately divorce battles, like most battles, tend to claim innocent victims. But just how much coercive power should the State have?
Daddy's Little (Christian) Girl
Such questions are always very hard. If I was a JW and my baby needed a blood transfusion, if I refused the hospital would go get a court order to override my parental rights. We tend to say, "good. why should a baby die because the parent was a member of a cult?" But it is a very short trip from overriding the parental rights of sincere JW and telling a Catholic parent that he/she has no right to forbid the child undergo sex ed and alternative lifestyle ed at the local public school.
ReplyDeleteYes, you make excellent points. I suppose if the state is to err, it should err on behalf of the individual.
ReplyDeleteMy Mom had another heart attack early on the morning of January 2 and went to the hospital (she's still in at this point in time). But there was an interesting situation in the waiting room to which my wife and I could not help but overhear.
Apparently, one of the patients in the cardiac critical care unit was unable to make any decisions for herself. Her husband was in the waiting room obviously distraught and quite loudly talking with his kids regarding his wife and their mother. The patient was going to need a blood transfusion but her mother is a Jehovah's Witness and was fighting with the husband to not allow the blood transfusion (I am not sure if the patient was JW or not). The husband was yelling about the craziness of not receivning a blood transfustion which would save his wife's life, and declared that he was not willing to lose his wife over this "religious" issue.
He began yelling about how so many different churches read the Bible and everyone preaches different things and all claim to have "the Truth". In his yelling he asked quite profoudly, how does anyone know which trurth is The Truth?
My wife and I just looked at each other and said at about the same time..."That's why God established The Church", to avoid all the confusion resulting from everyone's personal interpretation. "Come out of Babylon". I am so glad that I am Catholic!
God bless all!!!
